eva I see what you're saying, but that's not exactly what I meant. There's this thing that happens in the music industry where the album is mixed so that the songs are louder in an attempt to make them more popular. It's not about the heaviness of the guitars or the drums, but about the actual volume. It makes it harsh to listen to. Whether or not Amy is straining her voice isn't going to change the volume of the song, you know what I mean?

Does anyone else know what I mean when I say that this album is too loud? Especially on Lost in Paradise, it sounds like it was mixed waay too loudly. I imagine Wind Up thought the loudness war was going to make them money. -_- I get what you mean. Idk why but Secret Door is soooooo loud for me it's hard to listen to.

The only song where the loudness doesn't bother me is Lost In Paradise. But yea it really messed with a lot of these songs.

Osky Lost in Paradise, at the "Run away" and "They won't let me go" parts of the middle eight is pretty bad for me, but also Oceans and Made of Stone. It's annoying.

Yes I know what you mean I just added my 2 cents to why I find it hard to listen to it that's all I talked "heaviness" because I always thought that's the main reason of the loud mixing like in their minds in an attempt to make it more of a band album it was like "let's go more heavy=more loud". The main reason could just be what you're saying though as it does work like that some times..

It's the process called Mastering, which comes right after Mixing. Mixing is where they decide how loud the drums would be compared to the guitars, or which vocals ahould be louder on the left speaker or right, all the effects like reverb and delay that wasn't in the natural recording etc. Mastering is supposed to be where they level out the volumes of all the tracks so it feels more cohesive. This is also where they add a little more volume to the chorus so it stands out from the verses. But lately, they use this process in the, as Kazlan says, loudness war. i agree it is very annoying because it can cause overfatigue of the ears. The sad thing is if they keep it low, it would not give it the same oooomph as other songs played next to it on the radio. I think Ev was overdone in both mixing and mastering. The wall of sound (which I think is a Nick thing) that dilutes/muddies up their indiviual performances and the over-the-top mastering. Frankly, I just wish they gave me the option to dial the volume knob myself.

Oddly enough, the loudness is just what I need to shut myself away from reality. But that's just me, I guess.

This is true for me too, when I finally had enough of everything and just want to close my mind to the world I put this record and that's all I can hear, all the heaviness and Amy's voice and it's beautiful. This record has been growing on me since it came out, this wall of sounds effect made it hard for me to listen to the first few months, but now I really love it and appreciate it. This album contains some of my favorite Ev songs like "Erase This" and "Swimming Home". However I can still say TOD is my favorite, I thought Ev3 was slowly taking that place, but I was just checking videos from the last shows they gave and "All that I'm living for" came in, It was like falling in love with TOD all over again.

Frankly, I just wish they gave me the option to dial the volume knob myself. I wasn't aware of this mastering "trick" back when the album came out and I was SO disappointed with how loud, flat and similar the majority of the songs sounded upon the first few listens. I didn't really know what was to blame for it then, all I knew was that it didn't have the same quality as Fallen and TOD, where you could hear almost every little detail, without it being drowned out by guitars. Now that I know, I have a better understanding of how it happened, but it doesn't change how I feel about the album. Ev are at their best when they're experimenting with a variety of sounds. Most of the time, their songs sound very different to each other. EV3 as good as it is, doesn't have that variety. Having said that, I do know that EV3 also sounded the way it did because of all the shit Wind-Up dealt the band, and in return it ended up being their angriest album and anger usually means heavy guitars and screaming vocals, so it isn't entirely down to mastering. Wind-Up wanted a heavy album, so she bloody well gave them one and then kicked their asses to the curb. ROLE MODEL!

I just listened to this album straight through for the first time in forever last night, and I just had to come in here to say that it's a really damn good album! It wasn't exactly the direction I was hoping they'd take (I was hoping for a little more TOD-like experimentation), but it's such a solid hard rock album! The band sounds soooo good. And after almost every song, I would just find myself thinking "man, that is such a good song!" I think I've come to appreciate this album a lot more than when it first came out, which I'm really glad about. I have a feeling their next album is going to be really different and more the direction I wanted them to go, but I'll definitely still be able to appreciate this album within the band's discography as just a badass rock album.

I was just thinking... the band could release a 10th anniversary edition with demos and Lillywhite sessions, but yeah I'm dreaming too high. Not even the Fallen anniversary edition included the outtakes or 'new-old material'... lol.
Yeah, I know we got alternate versions of five songs from this album on Synthesis...
